The 8.8 cm Flak 18 (Flugabwehrkanone 18) was a cannon originally designed to combat air targets. However, it gained true fame as the most effective anti-tank weapon available to the German forces. The powerful muzzle velocity of the projectile, unparalleled accuracy and the ability to rotate a full 360° made it a deadly weapon on every front. In Africa, where the scorching sand met heavy Matilda II, Crusader and American Sherman tanks, the Flak 18 in the service of the Deutsches Afrikakorps became the true king of the battlefield. Mounted on its characteristic X-shaped carriage, towed by Sd.Kfz. vehicles, it could stop an Allied advance with a single precise shot.
