Designed as an enhanced version of the earlier T 478.3 series, the T 478.4 introduced an electric train heating generator in place of steam heating and featured a more powerful engine with modernised electrical equipment. A total of 86 locomotives were built between 1978 and 1980 by CKD Praha, and their distinctive dual-cab front earned them the popular nickname “Brejlovec” (Goggles) among railway enthusiasts.\nWith a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, a power output of approximately 1,472 kW, and a maximum speed of 100 km\/h (62 mph), the T 478.4, later Class 754, was widely used on heavy passenger and freight trains across standard-gauge routes in Czechoslovakia and its successor states.
