This family of Co'Co' locomotives was produced in the Soviet Union at Luhansk between the 1970s and early 1980s and became well known under the nickname “Ludmilla” among railway enthusiasts for its size, power, and distinctive Russian-built design.\nAfter reunification, a number of the robust DR Class 132 (later DBAG Class 232) locomotives were rebuilt to achieve a higher maximum speed of 140 km\/h, resulting in the Class 234 designation.
