Known for its excellent running qualities, the class quickly earned the affectionate nickname “Sächsischer Rollwagen” (Saxon rollers) thanks to its smooth performance on winding gradients. A total of 169 locomotives were constructed by the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik in Chemnitz, making the XII H2 one of the most successful Saxon passenger designs of the early 20th century.\nAfter World War I, many of these engines were incorporated into the newly formed Deutsche Reichsbahn fleet as DRG Class 38.2-3, numbered from 38 201 to 38 334, with ten additional units built in 1927. During and after World War II, some locomotives returned from foreign service, but the class gradually declined as newer motive power emerged.
