A total of 461 locomotives were produced to provide powerful, mixed-traffic performance across Italy’s 3 kV DC electrified network, handling everything from freight trains to intercity passenger services. The E.656 was developed from earlier FS types and became one of Italy’s most versatile mainline electrics.\nWith a Bo'Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and a continuous power output of around 4200 kW, the class can reach up to 150 km\/h, making it suitable for both heavy freight and faster passenger work.
