Developed in the early 1930s for Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), the E.428 was designed to haul heavy passenger and express trains on the newly electrified main lines of northern and central Italy. A total of 105 locomotives were built between 1934 and 1943, making it one of the principal classes of Italian electrics before and after the Second World War.\nThe E.428 featured a 1'Do1' wheel arrangement, giving substantial adhesion and power while maintaining stability at speed. It was among the first European locomotives to combine high power with high speed, capable of 125 km\/h, impressive for the era.
