A total of 194 locomotives were produced, forming part of the famous BB Alsthom family, a series of versatile electric designs that also included the BB 8500 and BB 17000.\nDesigned to operate on both 1 500 V DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC overhead systems, the BB 25500 brought true cross-network flexibility, eliminating the need to change locomotives at electrical boundaries. Its Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement and 2,940 kW power output made it capable of handling both freight and passenger traffic with ease. Different gear ratios allowed variants to focus on higher tractive effort or increased top speed, so the class could tackle mixed duties from regional trains to moderate-weight freight.\nBuild batches showed detail differences such as larger cabs and varied ventilation arrangements, reflecting ongoing refinements. The locomotives served widely on SNCF’s TER regional services and Transilien suburban network around Paris, as well as working cross-border trains to Switzerland in later years.\nAlthough all units were retired by January 2021, the BB 25500 remains an appealing prototype for modern French electrified layouts, representing flexible mixed-traffic operation from Era IV through early Era VI.
