Conceived as a way to push diesel mainline performance beyond conventional limits, the V 169 combined high power with advanced hydraulic transmission to explore what was possible on non-electrified routes.\nOnly a single prototype was ever built, based on the well-proven V 160 family platform but fitted with a much more powerful diesel engine and gearing optimised for speed. The intention was to create a locomotive capable of sustaining express passenger and fast freight duties at significantly higher speeds than standard V-160-series machines.\nDuring its service life, the V 169 demonstrated excellent performance and provided valuable data on high-speed diesel operation.
