Built between 1972 and 1978, a total of 170 locomotives were constructed by a consortium of leading manufacturers including AEG, BBC, Henschel, Krupp, Krauss-Maffei, Siemens and others. The class was conceived as a replacement for the older Class 150, offering greater power and a top speed of 120 km\/h suitable for fast freight working across Germany’s electrified network.\nThe Class 151 features a Co'Co' wheel arrangement, weighing around 118 tonnes and generating approximately 6,288 kW of power, giving it the muscle to haul heavy trains with excellent tractive effort. Early locomotives were delivered in traditional Deutsche Bundesbahn colours and later repainted into verkehrsrot traffic red as the DB livery modernised.\nOriginally capable of occasional passenger workings, the Class 151 became firmly established as a freight stalwart.
