Originally introduced as Class S 458.0, a total of 74 locomotives were delivered to the Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD) in three production batches between 1973 and 1983. In 1988, the class was officially redesignated Class 210.\nDesigned primarily for shunting duties and light transfer work, the Class 210 was developed alongside the larger Class E 458.0, but optimised for operation at major passenger stations, freight yards and depots where overhead electrification was available. A powerful main transformer allowed efficient operation directly from the overhead line, providing smooth, low-loss control of the traction motors.\nOne of the class’s defining features is its excellent low-speed control, enabling precise shunting movements at speeds as low as 5 km\/h—an essential capability for yard operations. Although intended for shunting, the Class 210 also proved versatile, regularly handling local passenger services in West and South Bohemia.\nFollowing the dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the locomotives passed to Ceské dráhy (CD) and Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR), later serving with ZSSK Cargo.
