It was conceived as a standardised, medium-power locomotive capable of handling both passenger and freight duties on non-electrified lines, and it became the first design in West Germany to embody many features of later mainline diesels.\nOnly 10 locomotives were built between 1952 and 1955, but the V 80 had a lasting influence on subsequent diesel development.
