A total of 35 locomotives were delivered in two series, known as Di 3a and Di 3b. Designed to replace steam traction on non-electrified lines, the Di 3 became the dominant motive power for Norway’s unelectrified main routes for decades.\nThe locomotives are easily recognised by their bulldog nose, a design inspired by American EMD diesels. Most were powered by a GM EMD 16-567C\/E engine producing around 1 305 kW (1 750 hp), driving a diesel-electric transmission. The early Di 3a units feature a Co'Co' wheel arrangement for high tractive effort, while the Di 3b sub-series used an (A1A)’(A1A)’ bogie layout with a slightly higher top speed but lower pulling power.\nThe Di 3 fleet entered service in 1957, taking over key unelectrified routes such as the Bergen Line, Dovre Line and Nordland Line, ending steam operations on these long-distance lines and significantly modernising Norwegian rail services. As electrification progressed in the 1960s and 1970s, Di 3s were reassigned to secondary routes including the Røros, Rauma, Solør and Valdres Lines.
