A total of 224 locomotives were built between 1960 and 1968 by major German builders including Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei, MaK and KHD. From 1968 onwards, they were renumbered as Class 216 under the modern DB classification system.\nFeaturing a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, a powerful V16 diesel engine and hydraulic transmission, the V 160 was designed with flexibility in mind. It could provide steam heating for passenger trains and deliver strong performance at speeds up to approximately 120 km\/h, making it ideal for mixed-traffic duties. Early prototypes included distinctive rounded designs before production models adopted more angular bodywork.\nThe success of the V 160 led to the creation of the V 160 family, a broad series of related classes including Classes 215, 217, 218, 219 and 210. These variants expanded power, speed and capability for both passenger and freight service across Germany.
