Introduced by the Austrian Federal Railways (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) in 1956, it was designed to modernise post-war regional services and later became closely associated with the Vienna Schnellbahn suburban network. Built between 1956 and 1960, the earliest units entered service as four-car sets, although most were later standardised into three-car formations consisting of a powered railcar, an intermediate coach, and a driving trailer. With the launch of the Vienna Schnellbahn in 1962, modified and newly built variants were equipped with improved multiple-unit controls and rapid-acting doors, making the Class 4030 well suited to high-frequency commuter operations.\nFor decades, the Class 4030 was a familiar sight on electrified routes across Austria, operating both regional passenger trains and busy suburban services around Vienna.
