It was mainly intended to lead self-propelled artillery units such as the Semovente da 75\/18, allowing commanders to coordinate fire and maintain communication with their batteries. Later versions replaced the original hull machine-gun arrangement with a more powerful 13.2mm Breda Modello 31 heavy machine gun mounted in a frontal ball mount.\n\nThe Breda Modello 31 was originally designed as a heavy anti-aircraft weapon but was also used as a defensive armament on Italian command vehicles. Its 13.2mm cartridge provided considerably more firepower than the standard 8mm Breda machine guns, making it effective against infantry, light vehicles, and lightly armoured targets.
