In February 1986, it was fitted with Electric Train Heat and became part of the subclass ‘47\/4’ and renumbered 47638. In November 1989, the locomotive was one of a number fitted with extra fuel tanks to give them an extended range, and was renumbered 47845. Following privatisation of BR, No. 47845 was used – along with others in the 478XX number range – by Virgin CrossCountry, prior to the introduction of the new Class 220 ‘Voyager’ trains in 2001.
