In February 1924, the locomotive was named ‘Flying Scotsman’ after the London King’s Cross-Edinburgh Waverley express service on which it was a regular performer. Later numbered 4472, it twice represented the company at the British Empire Exhibition and was the first locomotive to set an authenticated speed of 100mph. It was rebuilt as an ‘A3’ in 1947 and following retirement in 1963, became privately preserved and has toured both America and Australia.
