A total of 120 locomotives were produced to handle increasing post-war traffic, especially on demanding mountain routes such as the Gotthard line. Originally designed to haul heavy passenger and freight trains, it quickly became one of Switzerland’s classic mainline electrics, known for its strong performance and distinctive six-axle Co'Co' wheel arrangement.\nThe first 25 locomotives were famously named after the Swiss cantons and carried their coats of arms with chrome trim, earning them the nickname “cantons locomotives.” The remainder of the class carried the names of canton capitals or towns, and later units omitted much of the chrome decoration.
