A total of 81 locomotives, numbered 1701–1781, were delivered to modernise Dutch mainline traction and replace older electric types. They operate on 1.5 kV DC overhead electrification and feature a B'B' wheel arrangement with a power output suitable for both passenger and freight services.\nThe Class 1700 evolved from earlier NS electrics like the Class 1600\/1800, with updated electronics, a newer safety system (ATB Phase 4) and improved braking. Early members of the class were equipped with automatic BSI couplers to work in push-pull formations with double-deck coaches, while later units saw use with refurbished ICRm coaches or in conventional locomotive haulage.\nCapable of up to 200 km\/h (practically around 160 km\/h in service) and producing around 4,600 kW, the Class 1700 became a mainstay of Dutch electrified operations, handling intercity and regional passenger trains and freight work across the Netherlands. In 2023 the class was formally retired from NS service after more than three decades, with farewell and replacement operations by modern locomotives such as Siemens Vectrons on international routes.
