Its 2-8-2T wheel arrangement made it ideal for freight and mixed train work on branch lines and secondary routes. A total of around 775 locomotives were constructed between 1928 and 1943 by nearly every major German locomotive builder of the era. Its design also appeared in a simplified wartime version from 1942.\nClass 86s predominantly worked in the Mittelgebirge and regional networks, handling freight, light passenger and mixed trains with a top speed of approximately 70–80 km\/h. After WWII, 385 engines went to Deutsche Bundesbahn, 175 to the East German Deutsche Reichsbahn, and others to Austria’s ÖBB, Poland’s PKP (as Class TKt3), Czechoslovakia and the Soviet railways.\nThe class remained in service well into the 1970s, with the last DB withdrawals in 1974 and some DR examples running into the 1980s.
