Built between 1972 and 1978, a total of 170 locomotives were constructed by a consortium of leading manufacturers including AEG, BBC, Henschel, Krupp, Krauss-Maffei, Siemens and others. The class was conceived as a replacement for the older Class 150, offering greater power and a top speed of 120 km\/h suitable for fast freight working across Germany’s electrified network.\nThe Class 151 features a Co'Co' wheel arrangement, weighing around 118 tonnes and generating approximately 6,288 kW of power, giving it the muscle to haul heavy trains with excellent tractive effort.
