A total of 75 locomotives were delivered, originally numbered in the 7700 series, and they became known locally as the “Inglesas” (the English ones) due to their British construction by English Electric, Vulcan Foundry, and Westinghouse.\nDesigned with a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and built for 3 kV DC electrification on the Iberian gauge (1,668 mm), the Class 277 locomotives produced about 2,200 kW of power and could reach 110 km\/h. They were primarily used on freight services, although they also worked passenger trains when needed. Their comfortable cabs were seen as a significant improvement for crews at a time when steam traction still dominated many electrified routes.\nThe Class 277s were particularly valuable on mountainous electrified lines such as the Venta de Baños–Gijón route, where their strong traction helped them handle steep gradients and heavy loads.\nWithdrawals began in the late 1970s as more modern electric locomotives arrived.
