A total of 75 locomotives were constructed between 1952 and 1959 by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry for use on the 3 kV DC electrified network, particularly on freight and mixed-traffic duties. These engines were nicknamed the “Inglesas” (the English ones) by Spanish railfans due to their British origins and distinctive design.\nWith a Co'Co' wheel arrangement and a power output of around 2,200 kW, the Class 277s could haul heavy freight and passenger trains at speeds up to about 110 km\/h.
