The design was based on the French SNCF CC 7100 and adapted for Spain’s 1,668 mm Iberian gauge and 3 kV DC electrification. More than 136 locomotives were built between 1956 and 1965 by Alsthom and Spanish manufacturers including CAF, MACOSA, MTM, and S.E.C. Naval. They were nicknamed the “Francesas” (the French ones) due to their origins.\nWith a Co'Co' wheel arrangement, six traction motors and a total output of about 2,200 kW, the Class 276s could reach 110 km\/h and were used on both passenger and freight services across electrified lines. Some were later fitted for multiple-unit operation, improving flexibility.\nOver their long careers, Class 276 locomotives hauled expresses, fast passenger trains, and heavy freight, becoming a familiar sight on Spanish rails.
