Over 1,500 were built, each 26 feet long on a 15-foot wheelbase, typically formed into close-coupled sets of eight to eleven coaches. Initially equipped with hand brakes, they were later fitted with Westinghouse air brakes. Lighting evolved from oil lamps to gas, with some later models featuring electric lighting powered by dynamos in brake coaches.
