It was developed in the mid-2000s to meet European emissions and performance requirements and is officially designated JT42CWRM-100 by Electro-Motives Diesel. Over 100 locomotives have been built for operators such as Euro Cargo Rail (a DB Schenker subsidiary), with about 60 delivered for heavy freight use in France and other countries.\nClass 77s differ from standard Class 66s with modifications including a 12-cylinder EMD 710 engine meeting EU Stage IIIA emissions, enhanced traction gear, and improved crew comforts such as cab air conditioning and extra insulation.
